Speakers

Paul Schiele is the Director of Implementations - PLTW Launch, supporting schools in developing customized, strategic three-year implementation plans while also supporting schools with maximizing their PLTW Launch experience. Prior to joining PLTW, Paul taught fifth grade in the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District where he was the Department Chair/Teaching VP. Additionally, he was honored as a California PLTW Launch Teacher of the Year while still in the classroom. He holds an administrator license in two states and a master's degree in educational leadership.

Andy Sarbacker is the PLTW Director of Implementations - Middle School / High School and supports schools in developing customized, strategic three-year implementation plans while also supporting schools with maximizing their PLTW experience. Prior to joining PLTW, Andy taught 6-12 grade science for 10 years. He has a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Autum Barry is the Senior Director of Implementations at PLTW, overseeing efforts to identify, analyze, and communicate customized implementation solutions for schools and provide subject-matter consultancy. Previously she was the Director of School Engagement for PLTW in Ohio and West Virginia. Prior to joining PLTW, she was a PLTW Biomedical Science Master Teacher and has 12 years of high school teaching experience. Autum earned a bachelor's degree in microbiology from Miami University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Muskingum University, and a master's in educational leadership from the University of Cincinnati.

Glade Montgomery, Ph.D., is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, leading a team responsible for developing partnerships with business, industry, and universities to offer opportunities to PLTW students and connecting the PLTW network to career learning experiences. Prior to joining PLTW, Glade was a lifelong educator, serving 29 years in public education in Indiana as a teacher, administrator, and superintendent of schools in LaPorte, Ind. Glade earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Purdue University. He received the 2010 Norbert Nelson Outstanding Educational Leadership Dissertation Award from Purdue University and was selected 2009 Administrator of the Year by the Indiana Association of Office Professionals. He lives in Lafayette, Ind., with his wife Betsy and enjoys spending time outdoors and with family, including their six grandchildren.

Angela Anderson, Ed.D, is the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships at PLTW. Angela taught various science and PLTW biomedical science courses for ten years before joining PLTW. Angela holds a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in education from the University of California Davis, and a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. Angela received the 2017 Robert and Patricia Kern PLTW National Teacher of the Year award and was recognized through a 2018 resolution from the California State Assembly for her work in education. She currently lives in Sacramento, Calif., with her husband and two children, and enjoys coaching her children’s basketball teams and attending their sporting events.

Kaitlen Farruggia is the PLTW Coordinator at Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering in Greeley, CO. She is responsible for providing training and materials for staff and students, as well as developing partnerships with businesses and universities to offer opportunities to PLTW students and create career learning experiences. Before becoming the PLTW Coordinator at her school, Kaitlen spent 11 years teaching various grades from Pre-K to 4-6 grades. Kaitlen earned her master's in education leadership from Colorado State University and a bachelor’s in elementary education from National-Louis University in Illinois. Recently, Kaitlen has been nominated as the 2025 Colorado Teacher of the Year. She lives in Fort Collins, CO with her husband Joseph and daughter Sydney. She enjoys reading, going to concerts, and spending time outdoors with family.

Session Description

Members of the PLTW Policy and Government Relations Team will present key state and federal education policy trends and updates, as well as look ahead at state and federal policy and politics.

Speakers

Will Krebs is PLTW's Senior Vice President for Policy and Government Relations. He began his career as a classroom teacher on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico and has held a variety of leadership positions at state departments of education. Will holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., a master’s in education policy from the University of Colorado Boulder, and a certificate in education finance from Georgetown University. He’s currently pursuing a doctorate in education policy from the University of Kansas.

Chris Hogerty is PLTW’s Policy Director. Before joining PLTW in 2015, Chris was a Research Analyst in the Missouri Senate Division of Research, where he was one of eight individuals in the nonpartisan office tasked with writing legislation and shaping public policy for Missouri. Chris received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus in creative writing, a master's degree in library science, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri. Chris, his wife Jaime, and two sons currently reside in Columbia, Miss.

This session focuses on a collaborative report created by PLTW and NAF that describes the best practices and effects of combining these two programs in one academy pathway. Topics will include facilitation of student and educator engagement, impactful layering of learning opportunities, and professional support for educators.

Erin Dillon is the Vice President of Research at Project Lead The Way. In this role, she helps guide PLTW’s research agenda, conducts research on PLTW’s impacts on student and teacher outcomes, and facilitates internal knowledge sharing to drive program improvement. Before PLTW, Erin was a researcher at Mathematica, where she focused on evaluating education programs' effectiveness. Erin was also a Strategic Data Fellow with Harvard University’s Strategic Data Project, where she worked within the Center for Educator Effectiveness at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Erin earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the College of William & Mary and her Master of Arts in Social Sciences in Education at Stanford University.

Kenneth Lesley is the director of the Academy of Engineering at the McKinley Technology High School. Mr. Lesley started the academy in 2008 after realizing he used many engineering examples with his math (geometry) students. These were the lessons that were having the most impact on the student’s engagement and knowledge retention. He left the classroom in 2013 to become the academy’s first director when DCPS embraced the NAF model. Mr. Lesley has been in education for 21 years. He started his career in the petroleum industry as a specialist in high-angle controlled directional drilling. After 15 years, he transitioned to the software industry and spent the next ten years developing database solutions for government agencies. Mr. Lesley has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from MIT, an MBA from the University of West Florida, and a masters in the art of teaching from American University. He has a certificate in C programming from the University of California, San Diego, and a School Leadership and Management certificate from Harvard. He is also a licensed (retired) professional engineer in mechanical engineering.

Sylvia Huff, Ph.D., is the Senior Vice President of Research at PLTW. In this role, she is responsible for guiding PLTW’s research agenda and leading internal and external efforts to collect, analyze, and disseminate data related to student and teacher impact. Prior to joining PLTW, Sylvia served as the Executive Director of Research, Evaluation & Assessment for St. Cloud Public Schools and as a Research Director for Pearson Education. Sylvia earned a Ph.D. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences (Psychology) from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in the Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology program at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

Elizabeth Day is Vice President of Training Operations at PLTW where she leads and supports PLTW’s growing efforts around teacher professional development. In her tenure at PLTW, she has implemented a broad range of interactive instructional methods to support the expansion of engaging and innovative STEM learning experiences for students and teachers. Elizabeth's background is in industrial engineering and sustainable engineering. She is passionate about increasing access to PLTW content for teachers and students across the country.

Emily Neder is Director of Production on the Programs Team at PTLW. She supports all curriculum development teams on PLTW’s content delivery. From being in academia to a high school teacher to instructional design, Emily has always worked in education. She has a passion for crafting original learning experiences, working with diverse teams, and developing accessible content for all types of learners.

Brian Jones, Ph.D., is PLTW’s psychometrician, overseeing measurement science for the PLTW Assessment Team. He uses his expertise to improve current assessments and design new offerings. Before joining PLTW, Brian led psychometric activities in higher education, supporting institutional leaders with assessment, psychometric, and other research-related activities. Brian spent time teaching various high school and junior high STEM subjects after completing his bachelor's degree in technology and engineering education. He also earned his master’s degree in Instructional Psychology and Technology and his Ph.D. in Educational Inquiry, Measurement, and Evaluation from Brigham Young University.

Denise Mutlu is the Senior Vice President of Assessments at PLTW, overseeing all assessment (formative and summative) design processes. She holds over 25 years of experience in the K-12 and higher education sector as an assessment design expert spending her career at organizations like McGraw-Hill, ETS, ERB, and The College Board. She developed valid and reliable assessments for PK-16 and adult learners in formative, summative, and high-stakes admission and achievement testing. Denise has led numerous item development workshops to help teachers craft better assessments and items. Denise holds a bachelor’s degree in Literature from Cornell University, a master’s degree in Literature from Columbia University, and her Ed.D in Educational Leadership from New York University.

Terry Ausman is the Director of Assessment Experience at PLTW, focused on facilitating a smooth administration of PLTW End-of-Course (EoC) Assessments for teachers and students. Prior to joining PLTW, she worked as a math and science teacher before moving into a career in assessments with Prometric and ACT. Terry holds a master’s degree in Education with a focus in Instructional Systems and Distance Education from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from Colorado State University.

Our session will delve into Formative and Summative assessment, standards-based grading, and planning for differentiation.

Joyce Albert is the Curriculum and Standards Alignment Specialist at PLTW. She uses her expertise of curriculum and standards framework to analyze standards for all PLTW courses and differentiates documentation for each state. She previously taught elementary school for 12 years and holds a master's degree in educational technology. Using standards to drive instruction has been a focus throughout Joyce’s career, and she has used that knowledge to design standards-based courses in all subject areas.

Come along with us as we delve into the latest updates in the Human Body Systems (HBS) course. Get hands-on experience with two new HBS Edvotek labs, including using plaque assays to monitor the effectiveness of medications and working with model organism, C. elegans.

Brian Ell obtained his Ph.D. in molecular biology from Princeton University in the fall of 2013. His work describing the molecular interactions of microRNAs during breast cancer metastasis has been published in some of the top journals in the field, including Cancer Cell, Nature Medicine, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. In addition, he has worked extensively on science education and outreach initiatives developing experiments and curriculum for both K-12 and undergraduate programs, and founding the student-run Graduate Molecular Biology Outreach Program (GMOP) at Princeton University. Dr. Ell joined Edvotek, Inc. in the spring of 2014 where he has served as a Development Scientist, Director of Research, and is currently the Chief Scientific Officer. These roles at Edvotek have allowed him to combine his interests in biotechnology and education through the development of novel equipment and experiments to advance scientific literacy.

Lauren Beeson is an Instructional Developer at PLTW responsible for developing and revising high-quality courses and engaging teacher training experiences. Prior to joining PLTW, she served as a middle school science teacher, principal, and program director for the Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program where she mentored hundreds of college students and guided more than 3,000 students through hands-on inquiry-based STEM activities and lessons. She holds a bachelor’s in biology from Ohio State University and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from Ashland University. She is an alumni of the Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership and volunteers as an athletic coach in her community.

Session Description

Orthopaedics In Action® (OIA) is unique, hands-on curriculum for middle and high school classrooms that teaches bioengineering concepts through the lens of orthopeadics. OIA lessons have recently been adopted in PLTW Biomedical Science: Human Body Systems (HBS). In this workshop, we'll provide an overview of the OIA curriculum featured in HBS and introduce new lessons that align with both PLTW’s Biomedical Science and Engineering pathways. Participants will explore human movement science through the use of motion tracking software, investigate how biomechanics can help physical therapists treat knee pain, and design new orthopaedic implants to treat bone fractures. Participants will also be provided with free lesson plans that can be integrated into PLTW Biomedical Science and Engineering Pathways. This workshop is hosted through a partnership between PLTW, Sawbones®, and The Perry Initiative.

Jenni Buckley, Ph.D., is a Co-Founder of The Perry Initiative and a Professor at University of Delaware in Mechanical Engineering. She is the co-author of the original Orthopaedics in Action® curriculum and has run numerous professional development workshops for K12 teachers in biomechanics.

Amelia Lanier-Knarr, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of The Perry Initiative and has extensive experience in K12 curriculum design and outreach in the areas of biomedical engineering and biomechanics. She is presently involved in developing new OIA curriculum for middle and high school classrooms.

Kayla Pariser, Ph.D., is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Rice University Computational Neuromechanics Lab, as well as Perry Initiative Fellow. She has teaching and curriculum development experience in the areas of human movement and biomechanics and is presently developing new curriculum for OIA.

Amy Posch is a Mechanical Engineer at Sawbones, the manufacturers of OIA curriculum. She specializes in developing anatomically realistic training models for surgeons and engineers to use when designing medical devices. Amy is part of the OIA curriculum development team.

Izzy Roethel is a 23-year veteran science teacher and is currently in her 17th year teaching Accelerated Biology & Physiology at Huntington Beach High School. She is a department coordinator and has served as a BTSA support provider, teacher mentor, and curriculum developer. Izzy also acts as the faculty advisor to the Doctors of Tomorrow Club. Beyond the classroom, she indulges her passion for ecological travel, bringing global experiences back to her students.

Unlock the potential of real-time biomedical and neuroscience data experiments in your PLTW classroom. In this immersive workshop, you will learn how students can record and analyze live data from their brains, muscles, hearts, eyes, and neurons using SpikerBoxes and programmable brain-machine interface kits. Neuroscience is the most integrated of STEM sciences, captivating students and enhancing their understanding of the human body. Tailored for the entire Biomedical Science (BMS) Pathway, spanning high school courses like Human Body Systems (HBS) and Medical Interventions (MI), as well as middle school courses such as Medical Detectives and Design and Modeling, this session includes over 10 live experiments that will keep students riveted. Experience the excitement of hands-on learning and inspire the next generation of biomedical engineers and neuroscientists.

Speakers

Greg Gage is the co-founder and CEO of Backyard Brains. He is a neuroscientist, author and biomedical engineer who loves tinkering with all things electric. Currently, Greg is developing new tools, curricula, and experiments that allow the public to participate in neuroscience discovery. He is a senior fellow at TED and has given ten TED talks. He’s an award-winning investigator at the National Institute of Health, and he was recognized in a White House ceremony for his commitment to citizen science. Greg recently published “How the Brain Works” with MIT Press and is now working on a book exploring how brain models give rise to consciousness.

Kirk Fisher is a Biomedical Science Instructional Developer at PLTW. He ensures excellence in the PLTW Biomedical Science curriculum through team collaboration and was the principle subject matter expert while creating Pathogen Patrol. With a background in education, public health, and medicine, Kirk led instruction of PLTW Biomedical Science courses at Santa Rosa Academy prior to joining PLTW. Kirk holds a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from UC Riverside and did graduate work in infectious disease epidemiology at Columbia University. His experience includes roles at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness and the Children's Health Fund in NYC, enhancing his contributions to PLTW's educational initiatives.

Session Description

You've planned the experiment and collected data, now let's discuss the best way to analyze it. In this workshop, we will explore quantitative data analysis and statistics within four different assays. Gain hands-on experience in a broad range of experiments, including quantifying viral plaques and observing the behavior of C. elegans. We will conclude by demonstrating the use of AI to determine the concentration of antigen in your ELISA! Mastery of these skills is crucial to prepare students for careers in biotechnology and STEM.

Learn how PLTW Biomedical Science courses support student success in preparing for and competing in specific HOSA events.

Shannon Esposito is an Instructional Developer at PLTW for the PLTW Biomedical Science program. Shannon became a PLTW Biomedical Science Master Teacher in 2008, was a high school classroom teacher for 14 years, and an Instructional Coach for two years before joining PLTW. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Salisbury University, a master’s degree in teaching from Towson University, and a graduate certificate in instructional technology from Goucher College.

Kelly Woodruff has been a high school Biology CCP/Biomedical Sciences educator for 19 years at Northwestern High School in West Salem, Ohio. She is originally from Ohio and received her bachelor’s in biology and master’s in secondary education from the University of Akron. Most recently, Kelly completed a second master’s in microbiology and cell science from the University of Florida. In addition to teaching, she is also the Science Fair Advisor, HOSA Advisor, Junior Class Prom Advisor, and Faculty Manager. Outside of high school, Kelly instructs Biology and Human Anatomy & Physiology as an adjunct at North Central State College in Mansfield, OH.

In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore best practices for collecting and analyzing data with Vernier biomedical science sensors and Graphical Analysis software, focusing on EKGs, EMGs, respiration rate, heart rate, and spirometry. This session is designed for biomedical science teachers at all levels of experience with Vernier equipment — from seasoned users to those just getting started. Ask questions and get technical support from Vernier specialists with the equipment you use in your classrooms and labs.

Sara Tallarovic, Ph.D., came to Vernier Science Education from higher education where she spent 15 years developing and teaching courses in biology, human anatomy and physiology, animal behavior, vertebrate biology, neuroscience and endocrinology. As a Staff Scientist with Vernier, Sara has helped develop new Go Direct sensors and activities for human physiology and biology. She works with educators at all levels to incorporate hands-on data collection and analysis into science classrooms in ways that empower and engage students.

April Chancellor is an Instructional Developer at PLTW responsible for designing student and teacher materials for PLTW Biomedical Science courses. Prior to joining PLTW, April worked as curriculum manager for a youth-focused makerspace and in a variety of roles at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, including launching a program helping schools foster a building-wide culture for science. She holds a bachelor's in Parks Management and Conservation from Kansas State University and a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy from Loyola University. April also currently serves as the immediate past president of the board of directors for the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston, IL.

Scott Sandberg's career bridges the gap between deep technological expertise and impactful educational practice. Starting as a Systems Engineer, he specialized in securing IT infrastructures and evolved into a Senior Cybersecurity Engineer. Transitioning into education, he became an educator, CTE instructor, PLTW Master Teacher, administrator, and CTE coordinator and director, revitalizing computer science and cybersecurity education through strategic training for teachers and innovative program expansions. Scott’s diverse roles reflect his continuing commitment to developing advanced technological solutions and fostering transformative educational programs.

Josiah Price has dedicated over 15 years to teaching both science and computer science at a Tumwater high school in Washington State. His academic background is in the life sciences, which beautifully complements his passion for computer science, a field that he has embraced with enthusiasm. Josiah describes himself as a naturalist and minimalist at heart, yet finds computer science a compelling pursuit that occupies a special place in his life.

Jaime Hofert is a Director of School Success at PLTW. She brings a wealth of experience to her role, having been honored as a former PLTW Gateway Outstanding Teacher and Lead Launch Teacher. With extensive expertise gained from years of service in PLTW classrooms and central office administration, her journey began as a dedicated classroom educator. Jaime has focused her career around building relationships and providing actionable support to others to help them reach their STEM goals.

Danielle Ryan is a Director of School Success at PLTW. With more than 20 years in education, she has transitioned from teaching to administration while maintaining a student-first focus. Danielle has worked in charter and public schools, improving school grades by building effective instructional teams. She has a strong background in curriculum development and teacher coaching. Additionally, Danielle is a federally awarded grant writer, having directed grants such as the Magnet School Assistance Program Grants in Broward County, FL. Discover how gamified learning and immersive experiences on Roblox can revolutionize student engagement in this panel session. Since its 2023 launch, "Pathogen Patrol" has engaged over 1.5 million players, marking the first PLTW-designed learning experience on Roblox. Designed by PLTW and developed with Tipping Point Media, this game is part of the Human Body Systems course in the PLTW Biomedical Science pathway for high school students. The panel will include members of the Roblox Education team and the PLTW instructional design team who will share how curriculum design translates into award-winning game design. In "Pathogen Patrol," students transform into one of five different white blood cell types, working together to protect the host from invading pathogens. This immersive experience teaches about the human immune system's response to infections through fun and engaging gameplay, fostering problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the human body. This session will demonstrate the powerful fusion of instructional and game design, showcasing how captivating gameplay can be seamlessly integrated with educational content and allow students to witness and explore scientific phenomena that are otherwise hard to experience viscerally.

Adam Seldow, Ph.D., serves as Senior Director of Education Partnerships at Roblox with the goal of increasing access to high quality immersive learning experiences. Dr. Seldow taught secondary school mathematics in Boston Public Schools and led technology in large US school districts. He earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his master's and doctoral degrees in education policy and leadership from Harvard University.

Jason Rausch is the Senior Vice President of Programs – High School at PLTW. He has led curriculum and training development across all PLTW high school courses since 2012. Jason is passionate about providing students with access to high-quality STEM education and has been instrumental in expanding PLTW's reach and impact across the country. Prior to this role, Jason spent over 20 years as a teacher, a PLTW Engineering Development and Design Master Teacher, and an adjunct instructor. Kirk Fisher is a Biomedical Science Instructional Developer at PLTW. He ensures excellence in the PLTW Biomedical Science curriculum through team collaboration and was the principle subject matter expert while creating Pathogen Patrol. With a background in education, public health, and medicine, Kirk led instruction of PLTW Biomedical Science courses at Santa Rosa Academy prior to joining PLTW. Kirk holds a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from UC Riverside and did graduate work in infectious disease epidemiology at Columbia University. His experience includes roles at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness and the Children's Health Fund in NYC, enhancing his contributions to PLTW's educational initiatives.

Earlier this year, PLTW rolled out our E3: Empowering Educational Experiences initiative focused on enhancing the myPLTW experience for both teachers and students. Currently, these enhancements are available to PLTW Master Teachers, PLTW Biomedical Sciences Teachers, and teachers who participated in PLTW Professional Development beginning in May 2024. As we work to roll out these enhancements to all PLTW programs, teacher feedback is invaluable in helping us continue to improve our technology and user experience. This feedback session is designed specifically for teachers who have already utilized the E3 experience.

Jane Iglesia is a User Experience Designer at PLTW. Jane has been with PLTW since 2021 and champions PLTW's user experience by practicing inclusive design, accessible design, and pushing for qualitative user data through user research. Jane has a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and a minor in Cultural Anthropology from San Diego State University. Jane is certified in teaching English as a second language and specialized in child language acquisition. Prior to UX design, Jane was an educator for eight years.

Ashley Chambers is the Senior Vice President of Enterprise Data and Information Technology Delivery at PLTW. Ashley has more than a decade of experience in IT, joining PLTW in 2017 following her time in IT consulting. The evidence is clear: Computer science strengthens critical content knowledge and develops transportable skills across disciplines. We’ll review empirical evidence to support coding with elementary students while addressing common misconceptions, such as whether computer science equals video games, if time online is wasted time, and if coding instruction takes away from core content. Amy Magill is a 1st Grade teacher at East Farms STEAM Magnet School in the East Valley School District, located in Spokane, Washington. She has spent the majority of her career teaching 1st grade and has taught 3rd and 4th grade. Amy is also one of the PLTW Site Coordinators and Launch Lead Teachers for her school. She and her husband have 2 kids. Amy has been a Master Teacher since 2015 and has traveled the country and facilitated online training for Launch Classroom Teacher and Launch Lead Teacher Training. Amy enjoys crafting, baking, time outdoors, and time spent with family and friends.

She is also a National Board Middle Childhood Generalist Certified Teacher and a Mickelson Exxon Mobil Science Teacher, a Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, and a PLTW Launch National Teacher of the Year. McKenna is an accomplished educational strategist with 20 years of classroom experience implementing STEM programs and robotics competitions for students at all levels. In his current role, McKenna ensures the company’s educational STEM solutions align with global educational standards and fulfill the needs of today’s educators. Ashley has been a presenter at California STEAM Symposiums, PLTW California State Conferences, Sparking Curiosity and PLTW Master Minds conferences, sharing her expertise and insights with fellow educators. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to education, Ashley has been awarded the 23rd Congressional District Inspirational Educator Award on two occasions as well as the Paramount Education Program Most Influential Educator Award.

Dani Gomez, PLTW's Director of New District Engagement for California and Arizona, is an experienced educator and passionate advocate for STEM education. Bringing expertise and enthusiasm to PLTW's National Summit, Dani has a strong foundation in fostering curiosity and engagement in diverse classrooms. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a minor in Spanish and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood and Special Early Childhood Education. With a background as an Early Childhood and Dual-Language Educator, Dani excels in creating inclusive learning environments that inspire students. Her dynamic communication skills and public speaking abilities have been showcased at educational conferences nationwide, and at events to encourage students to become the next wave of innovators. Her previous work with the National Society of Black Engineers and participation in student events demonstrate her commitment to equity and access in STEM for learners of all ages.

Karine holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics.

Steve Pellathy, Ph.D., is an Instructional Developer at PLTW. Prior to joining PLTW, Stephanie ran a high school biotechnology program in Howard County, Maryland and worked as a biomedical researcher at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Stephanie holds a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction and a Bachelor of Science in public health.

April Chancellor is an Instructional Developer at PLTW responsible for designing student and teacher materials for PLTW Biomedical Science courses. Prior to joining PLTW, April worked as curriculum manager for a youth-focused makerspace and in a variety of roles at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, including launching a program helping schools foster a building-wide culture for science. She holds a bachelor's in Parks Management and Conservation from Kansas State University and a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy from Loyola University. April also currently serves as the immediate past president of the board of directors for the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston, IL.

Amy Baldwin is a PLTW Gateway teacher in Summerville, South Carolina. Amy has been teaching 24 years with 11 of those as a PLTW teacher. In 2021, she was named South Carolina STEM Educator of the Year for her work in increasing the number of students enrolled in STEM programs. Amy's Girl Powered initiatives have increased the number of girls and minorities enrolled in STEM programs in the district. Amy was named the 2021-22 Patricia and Robert Kern National PLTW Educator of the Year and the 2022 National Learning Blade Teacher of the Year.

David Conley is founder, president, and principal partner of EdImagine, an educational strategy consultancy. He is also Professor Emeritus, University of Oregon where he founded and directed the Center for Educational Policy Research. He also founded and served as Chief Executive Officer of the Educational Policy Improvement Center. He's a national thought leader on college and career readiness, a term he defined and popularized. His work over the past decade has focused on new and innovative systems of assessment. His most recent book is, "The Promise and Practice of Next Generation Assessment."

Denise Mutlu, Ed.D. is the Senior Vice President of Assessments at PLTW, overseeing all assessment (formative and summative) design processes. She holds over 25 years of experience in the K-12 and higher education sector as an assessment design expert spending her career at organizations like McGraw-Hill, ETS, ERB, and The College Board. She developed valid and reliable assessments for PK-16 and adult learners in formative, summative, and high-stakes admission and achievement testing. Denise has led numerous item development workshops to help teachers craft better assessments and items. Denise holds a bachelor's degree in Literature from Cornell University, a master's degree in Literature from Columbia University, and her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from New York University.

Terry Ausman is the Director of Assessment Experience at PLTW, focused on facilitating a smooth administration of PLTW End-of-Course (EoC) Assessments for teachers and students. Prior to joining PLTW, she worked as a math and science teacher before moving into a career in assessments with Prometric and ACT. Terry holds a master's degree in Education with a focus in Instructional Systems and Distance Education from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences from Colorado State University.

Brian Jones, Ph.D., is PLTW's psychometrician, overseeing measurement science for the PLTW Assessment Team. He uses his expertise to improve current assessments and design new offerings. Before joining PLTW, Brian led psychometric activities in higher education, supporting institutional leaders with assessment, psychometric, and other research-related activities. Brian spent time teaching various high school and junior high STEM subjects after completing his bachelor's degree in technology and engineering education. He also earned his master's degree in Instructional Psychology and Technology and his Ph.D. in Educational Inquiry, Measurement, and Evaluation from Brigham Young University.

Session Description

In this session, we will explore how Federal Way Public Schools used PLTW and Ardagh Group grants to systemically integrate district-wide PLTW units and courses at all 24 elementary schools and 9 middle schools. We'll discuss the protocols developed to support a focused, intentional PLTW integration plan, including the structures that ensured every teacher was trained and equipped for success. From roadblocks to opportunities, this session will explore the journey from planning to implementation and to sustainment in ensuring STEM for all in FWPS.

Scott Houy's pivotal role in introducing PLTW Engineering at Monterey High School has transformed the educational landscape. PLTW empowers students to explore real-world challenges, equipping them with in-demand skills. Scott currently teaches PLTW Engineering to second-, third-, and fourth-year students, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. His influence extends to the robotics arena, where he serves as the instructor and mentor for FIRST Robotics Team 4734, inspiring students to delve into automation, programming, and engineering.

She fuels her enthusiasm by conducting research, avid reading, and staying informed about the latest NASA missions.

Discover how UF Biotility integrates a free badging system into their no-cost practice exams, allowing students to achieve milestones while working toward the nationally recognized BACE credential. The BACE exam, designed by industry experts, serves as a hiring metric to assess competencies, skills, and knowledge application. Tamara Mandell has more than 20 years of experience in various roles of the Cell & Gene Therapy industry. She currently serves as Director of UF's Biotility, a workforce talent development and credentialing organization focused on bridging industry defined standards with coursework, training, and credentialing. Tamara led the development of the BACE credentialing exam, used to identify qualified candidates for hire, and to provide alternative pathways to employment. Her passion lies in advocating for the industry, instructors, and students, while expanding career awareness.

Hear one school's transformative journey in re-imagining and re-developing curriculum and pathways. As school leadership developed a plan to improve student engagement/connection to curriculum and P/SAT achievement, the school leveraged PLTW Engineering to develop a STEM pathway supporting students at all levels. Through the applicable and transferable skills gained in cross-curricular projects and assessments, the school has seen increased student interest in STEM majors, projects that have become real-life service learning projects, increased interest in STEM enrichment activities, and improved standardized assessment math scores.

Britney Thompson has been a PLTW Launch Lead Teacher for five years, and has taught PLTW Launch Pre-k through 5th grade in a STEAM Lab special/enrichment. Prior to teaching PLTW, she taught 4th grade science and reading for ten years. Britney joins three other teachers who lead her district in STEM education and brings her passion for project-based learning to all 11 elementary schools in the district.

Kate Kunkel has been a Launch Lead teacher in the Kenton County School District for five years. She works with 975+ PreK-5th grade students each week, navigating the exciting, inquiry-based PLTW curriculum. Kate taught 5th grade for 21 years, with a focus on math instruction. Hands-on lessons and projects that foster problem solving and creativity have always been the focus of her teaching. Collaboration with content teachers allows for rich connections and meaningful application across the curriculum. Kate sponsors after-school cybersecurity and robotics clubs and is currently working with Northern Kentucky University to create a "CyberFest" event for elementary age students in the northern Kentucky area.

Renee Kidwell lives in Northern Kentucky with my husband and two children. I have been an educator for 18 years, I have had the opportunity to be both a classroom teacher and enrichment teacher. I hold a degree in Elementary Education with a Master's endorsement in technology. I have led a one-to-one iPad education program, Nintendo grant, University of Cincinnati girls engineering camp, and Bosch STEAM camp. I am currently the lead PLTW Launch teacher and trainer for our school district. My days are spent in a science lab at Summit View Academy where I teach STEAM to PK-5 grade students.

She currently supports PLTW teachers with professional development and program articulation at Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District. Kelly was awarded PLTW Gateway Teacher of the Year in 2017.

Randy Mills, a 30-year educator in the Aurora Public Schools, has taught across a wide spectrum, from kindergarten to high school. Randy's expertise includes teaching IED and serving as a Master Teacher for PLTW Computer Science and Cybersecurity. In 2020-2021, he was awarded PLTW National Computer Science Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Randy received the 2021 Colorado Affiliate Educator of the Year award from NCWIT. Currently residing in Laramie, Wyoming, he remains a passionate advocate for making computer science accessible to all students, with a strong focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

As a 500-Hour Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT) with expertise in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mindfulness, Megan also incorporates trauma-informed practices into her science classroom. Her passion lies in empowering students to leverage their individual and collaborative skills.

Join us on Sherrard Middle School's PLTW/VEX Robotics team journey, from a start-up PLTW Gateway program to competing at the prestigious VEX World competition in just two short years. In the session, we'll showcase the key components of the PLTW Automation and Robotics course that prepared their students for success in competitive robotics. We'll also explore how PLTW Computer Science for Innovators and Makers paved the way for their coding skills in VEX V5.

Participants will actively engage with AI and Autodesk Fusion, crafting their own unique pieces to take home as souvenirs. This session aims to ignite curiosity and inspire ideas for fostering inclusivity in engineering classrooms by incorporating sentimental keepsakes into student projects.

Corey Duzan, a PLTW IED Master Teacher at Lockport Township High School, brings over a decade of experience to the classroom. For 13 years, he has taught IED (Introduction to Engineering Design) and served as an IED Master Teacher for 10 years. Beyond his PLTW role, Corey is an adjunct CAD professor at Joliet Junior College, where he imparts knowledge in AutoCAD, Inventor, and Fusion. His passion lies in teaching CAD and STEM, empowering students to transform ideas into tangible inventions and innovations. Corey finds particular excitement in guiding the transition from design concepts to functional prototypes using 3D Printing, Laser Cutting/Engraving, and Making.
