Lockheed Martin and PLTW: Inspiring Tomorrow’s STEM Leaders
Preparing Students for the Future
Since 2007, Lockheed Martin has partnered with PLTW to address the nation’s critical need for future engineers, computer scientists, and math- and science-trained professionals, and to equip all students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive.
Lockheed Martin supports PLTW Launch, PLTW Gateway, and PLTW Engineering programs in urban school districts across the nation and has contributed to the development of PLTW’s middle school and high school courses focused on aerospace engineering and flight. The company has also connected Lockheed Martin engineers with students through the company’s Engineers in the Classroom initiative.
Success in building the next generation of STEM talent depends on collaboration among industry, educators, policy makers, and families. Our partnership with Project Lead The Way is designed to educate and inspire tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
Taking Career Learning to New Heights
In 2014, Lockheed Martin – in partnership with PLTW and the Arlington Independent School district in Texas – launched a high school engineering internship program.
The program, which is open to PLTW Engineering students in the district, provides participants with the opportunity to work alongside Lockheed Martin engineers at the Fort Worth Aeronautics facility. Throughout the internship program, students also continue to develop in-demand, transportable skills they’ve learned in the PLTW classroom, such as communication and critical thinking.
Upon successful completion of the program, students are invited to return to the Aeronautics facility as college interns during future summers.
Connecting the Classroom to Careers
Lockheed Martin’s STEM education outreach initiative, Engineers in the Classroom, provides opportunities for Lockheed Martin employees to interact with and inspire the next generation of engineers and technologists by serving as local school advisors, extracurricular activity mentors, and career role models for students in communities where these engineers live and work.
Throughout Lockheed Martin’s partnership with PLTW, Lockheed Martin engineers have made a difference in the lives of PLTW students across the country through the Engineers in the Classroom program.Learn More
