Phoebus senior named Gates Millennium Scholar

(March 18, 2012) HAMPTON, Va. - A Phoebus High School senior, Mia Knowles, has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar, according to the school division. The scholarship pays for participants to attend any college in the United States.

Knowles has been a member of the Phoebus High Debate Team for four years and was recently listed as valedictorian of the Class of 2012.

She is the second Phoebus student to become a Gates Scholar in recent years. Chris Russ, who graduated in 2010, received the award that year.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program awards scholarships to 1,000 students each year, according to its website. It was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Knowles has been accepted to the University of Virginia, according to the district's spokeswoman.
