Learn about a few of the many exciting opportunities currently available to PLTW students:

2019 PLTW Engineering Design Competition

  • What? PLTW, Chevron, and John Deere welcome students to engage in the 2019 PLTW Engineering Design Competition, which gives participants the opportunity to address a problem relating to portable, renewable, and affordable energy. The competition is designed to recognize and reward outstanding student projects and to highlight the importance of engineering design that solves real-world problems.  
  • When? Registration is open now and closes April 19, 2019.  
  • Where? Online through the Innovation Portal.  
  • Who? Open to teams of PLTW high school students, grades 9-11. Teams must consist of two to four students.

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow

  • What? Designed to boost interest and proficiency in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), this nationwide contest challenges public school teachers and students in grades 6-12 to show how STEAM can be applied to help improve their local community.
  • When? Teachers are invited to submit applications Sept. 6 through Oct. 30.  
  • Where? Apply online.  
  • Who? Open to public school teachers and their students in grades 6-12.

2018 DENSO Road Safety Engineering Design Challenge

  • What? According to the World Health Organization, road accidents kill 1.25 million people and injure millions more. Participating students are challenged to develop an engineering-based solution to address a road safety problem. The problem could be a broad vehicle-based issue (like distracted driving) or a local concern (such as a crash-prone intersection).
  • When? Registration is open now and closes Sept. 21, 2018.  
  • Where? Online through the Innovation Portal.  
  • Who? Open to teams of PLTW Engineering students, grades 9-12. Teams must consist of two to four students.

StellarXplorers: The National High School Space Challenge

  • What? StellarXplorers is a program designed to inspire and attract high school students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. Created and produced by the Air Force Association (AFA), a 501(c)(3) educational organization, StellarXplorers features an exciting, space-focused competition using professional tools to address real-world problems.
  • When? Registration is open now and closes Oct. 1, 2018.        
  • Where? Virtual, with top teams receiving an all-expenses-paid trip to Colorado for the Finals in spring 2019.
  • Who? Teams can come from any high school (including home schools) or youth organization. Teams consist of an adult Team Director (usually a teacher) and two to six students.

The Society of Women Engineers Presents: Invent it. Build it.

  • What? The largest nonprofit organization for women engineers, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), brings its annual event, Invent it. Build it., to Minneapolis on Oct. 20, 2018. Invent it. Build it. is an experience designed to encourage middle school and high school girls to choose a career in engineering. Students participate in a hands-on engineering experience with SWE members. While the girls are having fun building and inventing, parents and educators learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admissions, and resources. The cost of the programs is $7.    
  • When? Oct. 20, 2018, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. CDT. Register by Oct. 13.      
  • Where? Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 2nd Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN 55403  
  • Who? Girls in grades 6-12, parents, and educators.
