Virtual Computer Labs with AppStream 2.0

PLTW, in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has collaborated with SynchroNet, an AWS consulting partner, to virtualize software through Amazon’s AppStream 2.0 service. Software used in PLTW courses is now accessible through virtual computer labs on laptops that did not previously meet the technology requirements. This enhancement makes software available virtually creating less dependence on physical computer labs and eliminating some technical requirements needed for computers.

*Non-Windows operating systems will require additional hardware to use USB devices featured in PLTW courses.

Get Ready to Implement!

  • Prepare your IT department or AWS consulting partner with the information provided in our Overview and FAQ
  • Make sure you have an active AWS account with AppStream 2.0 enabled. This is required to access virtual computer labs.
  • The Solution Center can provide you with additional information and contact information if you need to setup an AWS account or add AppStream 2.0 to your existing account.

Help Enhance Virtual Computer Labs!

Help enhance virtual computer labs by sharing your usage data! Once you and your students have started using the virtual computer lab you can help inform future enhancements, experience improvements, and expansion of virtual computer labs by sharing your usage data.

To submit your usage data please refer to this guide or email [email protected] with the following information:

  • How many fleets is your school or district running?
  • What images correspond to the fleet(s)?
    • For example, Fleet 1 is PLTW Gateway
  • Are you manually starting and stopping fleets? Yes or No
    • If yes, what frequency are you doing that? Weekly, Daily, or Per period
  • What is your running mode? Always On, On-demand, or a combination of both
  • What is the fleet streaming instance type?
  • Screen shots of each fleet
    • Screen shots of your fleet provide PLTW with the following information:
    • Capacity: How many instances your school is provisioning
    • Usage: In-use capacity including the amount of time spent in the image, the time of week and time of day spent in the image
