A Custom Jacket for Peer with Spastic Cerebral Palsy | PLTW

Karen Hill is director of professional and program development at Timberland High School in Wentzville, Missouri.

Students in Crystal Green's Biomedical Innovation class at Timberland High School in Wentzville, Missouri, made a custom jacket for a fellow student, Zach Blakemore, who has spastic cerebral palsy. The “Zacket,” as the students have dubbed it, was specially made with Velcro straps so it’s quick and easy to put on. It’s also adorned with patches featuring the emblem of Captain America – Zach’s favorite superhero.

The students also plan to create a similar jacket for babies to wear in a car seat.

This is another real-world example of the value PLTW courses bring to our district, as well as the talent and compassion of our students. The students, along with their teacher, Crystal Green, and Instructional Assistant Sherry Miller, who submitted the idea, were all recognized before the Board of Education earlier this year.

Furthermore, a local news station in St. Louis aired this story and follow up.
