PLTW Senior Vice President and Chief Engagement Officer David Dimmett has been invited to participate in a conference hosted by the White House Council on Women and Girls, the U.S. Department of Education, and Georgetown University Law Center on Poverty and Inequality. Front and Center: Bringing Marginalized Girls into Focus in STEM and Career and Technical Education aims to discuss policies and programs that will help underrepresented girls – including low-income girls and girls of color – gain greater access to STEM and CTE programs. The conference takes place next week on Jan. 15 at Georgetown University Law Center, and Dimmett will serve as a member of the working groups.

“I’m honored by the opportunity to participate in this very important discussion,” Dimmett said. “It is important that all of us work to identify the barriers keeping young girls out of STEM and CTE programs and do everything in our power to eliminate those barriers and increase access. Girls must feel empowered and confident in their ability to excel in the full range of STEM career pathways.”

The conference includes opening remarks by Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to President Obama and chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls; a panel discussion including young women with first-hand experience of the barriers to and benefits of STEM and CTE programs; examples of promising programs; and a policy discussion by numerous national and state education leaders and policymakers.
