Biomedical Sciences Software Update
In Biomedical Sciences (BMS) courses, students use sensors and computer software to monitor biological functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and lung function. Since the program started, PLTW curriculum has utilized the National Instruments LabVIEW software program to collect and analyze student data and Vernier probes and sensors to collect physiological data. The BMS program is making the transition to the Vernier Logger Pro software to support data acquisition and analysis. Existing PLTW schools will be able to continue using LabVIEW as they complete the transition to the new system. Please see details below.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why the transition?
PLTW is responding to network feedback about both the cost and the ease of use of the LabVIEW software. Currently, LabVIEW is being leased annually by schools, and is limited to a set number of seats. Logger Pro software is a one-time purchase of $184.94 (price now includes shipping) and can be loaded onto an unlimited number of computers. While LabVIEW software has great academic power for programming and data analysis, the Logger Pro software is more user-friendly for a high school audience. Both software packages allow for the analysis of biological data collected by students. Schools should, however, experience fewer IT issues given the absence of required annual updates. Also, students can load the Logger Pro software on their home computers, allowing them to analyze data after class or at home, which is not an option with LabVIEW.
How does this change affect the curriculum?
For the affected activities, PLTW will make available two versions of instructional materials - one utilizing LabVIEW and one utilizing Logger Pro - which will be available for several years. Some aspects of the activities may vary, but the concepts will remain consistent. With these two versions, schools can transition on their own timeline with the same concepts covered and no impact on assessments.
Will I be able to use my existing equipment with the Logger Pro software?
All of the Vernier sensors that are being used in the curriculum are compatible with the Logger Pro software. However, the interface box that links the sensors and the computer, the SensorDAQ, will need to be replaced. The functional equivalent of the SensorDAQ is the Vernier LabQuest Mini’®. Each unit has a one-time cost of $145.80 (price now includes shipping) and typically ten units are recommended per class of 20 students.
All software, interface boxes, and sensors are available for purchase from the PLTW Purchasing Manual.
What are the implications of continuing to use LabVIEW?
PLTW will continue to make the yearly license of LabVIEW available for sale to schools. The LabVIEW-based activities will be available for several years, and there are no implications on course/instructional content. However, LabVIEW software is updated frequently, which affects the way a user locates the various buttons and functions. PLTW will not update the Spring 2012 curriculum for these visual changes; however, with minor prep work, experienced teachers will be able to navigate this in their classrooms.
How will a transition to Logger Pro impact Core Training?
Beginning in Summer 2011, training will feature the Logger Pro software. During training, there will be supplemental sessions provided to support teachers who will continue to use LabVIEW in their schools.
What are the costs associated with a LabVIEW to Logger Pro transition?
Logger Pro software must be purchased for $184.94 (price now includes shipping). Schools must also purchase a class set of Vernier LabQuest Mini’s®. Each unit costs $145.80 (price now includes shipping) and ten are recommended for a class of 20 students. While schools are asked to make an initial investment to buy the Logger Pro software as well as the LabQuest Mini’s®, these are one-time costs and can be used on an unlimited number of computers for years to come. This transition is voluntary and can be planned for over time.
I am halfway through implementing my program, what should I do?
All of the Vernier sensors you have already purchased are compatible with both the LabVIEW and Logger Pro software. If you have already purchased the SensorDAQs that are compatible with the LabVIEW software, you can continue to use LabVIEW. However, if you are able to purchase the LabQuest Mini’s®, it is encouraged that you make the transition to Logger Pro.
