Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Founded in 1865 as one of the nation's earliest technological universities, WPI is known for its innovative undergraduate curriculum through which students master ideas in the classroom, and learn to apply theories outside of class by completing real-world projects, in close collaboration with faculty, at more than 20 locations around the world (in fact, WPI sends more engineering students overseas than any university in the country). At WPI, learning goes well beyond science and technology to include rich opportunities in humanities, arts, social sciences, and management. This approach to education produces technologically sophisticated, well-rounded graduates who are ready to create and manage scientific and technological innovation in socially-beneficial ways. The teamwork experiences they've gained solving open-ended problems make WPI graduates unusually successful in their professions and in graduate school.
Over the years, WPI alumni have brought the world many important innovations, including the liquid-fueled rocket, the airbag safety system, negative feedback theory, and the Segway Human Transporter. With 2,700 undergraduates and 1,000 full- and part-time graduate students, WPI offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 30 disciplines in science, engineering, the management of technology, the liberal arts and the social sciences. Working in more than 30 research institutes, centers and laboratories, the university's faculty and students are engaged in cutting-edge work in a broad range of fields.
WPI is located in central Massachusetts, in the city of Worcester. We are within commuting distance of Boston, MA, Providence, RI and Hartford CT.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute became a PLTW Affiliate in 2005.
