Forging Future Generations of Engineering & Science Professionals

New Mexico State University

From its beginning in 1891 with the first courses offered in civil and mechanical engineering, the College of Engineering at New Mexico State University has been a leader in preparing students for rewarding careers. Today, the college offers 10 degree granting programs and is continually updating curriculum to meet the changing needs of the high-tech world. Two recently added degrees, Information and Communication Technology and Aerospace Engineering have become the fastest growing programs in the college. NMSU engineering graduates are highly sought by businesses and industry throughout the United States and abroad.

Engineering faculty members have distinguished themselves with numerous awards in both teaching and research. The college is home to the Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications, the Bridge Research Program, the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium. Most recently, the college combined the resources of WERC, the Southwest Technology Development Institute and the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center under the umbrella of the Institute for Energy and the Environment. This group is addressing some of the most urgent needs of our time. In 2005/2006, the college had more than $16.5 million in research expenditures. This level of research activity affords students tremendous opportunities to get hands-on experience while working under the mentorship of faculty.

Student success is of the utmost importance for the college. With a faculty to student ratio of 19 to 1, all of our lecture-based freshmen courses are taught by regular faculty. In step with NMSU's land-grant mission to serve a diverse population, the College of Engineering has been ranked fifth in the nation for graduating Hispanic students and sixth in the nation for graduating Native American students.

NMSU became a PLTW Affiliate in 2006.
