  University of South Florida
Out of a sandy airfield north of Tampa rose the University of South Florida, the first public university established specifically to address the needs of Florida's rapidly emerging urban regions. In 1965, the St. Petersburg campus opened, and USF was accredited, gaining additional academic respect. The university came of age in the 1980s. The graduate school was established, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute opened, the Lakeland campus opened, and enrollment passed 30,000. The 1990s brought widespread recognition of USF as a major research university. USF was recruiting superb scientists, creative artists, and cutting-edge scholars in everything from social sciences to literature. In the first year of the 21st Century, USF has 180,000 graduates and almost 36,000 students in 200 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is ranked in the top tier of U.S. research universities by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Learning.

The University of South Florida became a PLTW National Affiliate Training Center in 2001.

PLTW Summer Training Institute

Summer Training Information Will Be Available Soon

College Credit For Summer Training:

  • Participants in Summer Training Institutes can receive University of South Florida graduate credit by paying all applicable tuition and fees.

College Credit For High School Students:

  • To achieve University of South Florida recognition, secondary school students need to complete a PLTW sequence of courses [IED, POE, DE or EDD and one additional PLTW elective] in a PLTW-certified school, attain an overall unweighted GPA of average of 3.0 in the PLTW courses, and achieve a 70% on the course college credit examination. These students may waive a maximum total of one to four non-transcript credit hours towards the students’ required number of program course credit hours, if enrolled in one of the following bachelor degree programs: Civil and Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, or Mechanical Engineering Programs. No grades will be given for the course(s). One non-transcript credit hour may be applied to Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering bachelor degree programs. Additional waivers may be used to substitute enrollment in selective courses, or may apply to Alternative Admissions; these are explained on the USF website.
