Thomson Delmar Learning and Project Lead The Way Collaborate on New Pre-Engineering Curriculum

New Textbook Series to Support Pre-Engineering in High Schools and Middle Schools

Clifton Park, NY, 03/20/2006 Thomson Delmar Learning, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), today announced plans to work with Project Lead The Way Inc. (“PLTW”) to publish a series of high school and middle school textbooks that will be aligned with PLTW’s pre-engineering curricula. Under the agreement, Thomson Delmar Learning will produce either adaptations of existing texts or wholly new works that, when combined with the PLTW curriculum materials, form integrated learning packages for nine courses.

Project Lead The Way Inc. of Clifton Park, NY, is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that promotes pre-engineering courses for middle and high school students by forming partnerships with public schools, higher education institutions and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from our educational system.

PLTW courses introduce students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college. The high school sequence starts with Introduction to Engineering Design and continues with Digital Electronics, Principles of Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Biotechnical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Engineering Design and Development. There is also a middle school course entitled Gateway To Engineering. For all these courses, PLTW provides ongoing teacher training. The missing link in PLTW’s curriculum has been a textbook series that directly supports the courses.

PLTW and TDL plan to collaborate on a rigorous product development process that will match textbook content to course coverage. The resulting textbooks will carry PLTW’s recommendation as having met its curriculum standards.

“Teachers and students are the winners in this new collaboration between PLTW and Thomson Delmar Learning,” said Dave Garza, vice president of Thomson Delmar Learning Technology and Trades business unit. “We’re committed to producing a series of textbooks that bolster PLTW’s mission of increasing the number of young people who pursue careers in engineering and technology.”
